export format defaults?

The recent change to exporting meshes as 3MF by default instead of STL has kind of messed with my workflow.

macOS allows you to easily browse and preview STL files as part of the file manager.  You get a preview of the model as an icon, and you can easily rotate the model in preview panes/views.  It does none of this for 3MF files.

Every time I export a file, I have to choose STL.  Is there a way to make it the default?

On a related note, is there any way to have exported file names default to *not* include the revision number to make it easier to overwrite my previous iteration and quickly reload the current model in my slicer?

Hi,

How can it be a problem to select the desired format from a menu?

No matter which format is default, there will always be people who prefer another one at this point.

It would be nice to be able to set the default file format like you do in CAM when generating gcode and can set the extension.  Having to set it every time is annoying.

I agree.

While in a single session F3D will remember your last selection, but upon restart, it will always default to 3MF.

Has there been an update that changed this?  Mine is defaulting to 3mf every time within a session.  It is also defaulting to mm where as before I needed to change it from inch to mm every time (and my document setting is inch).

For the last couple of days, Fusion360 now gives me STL as the default.  So there definitely has been a change.

Mine is remembering my selection on the next launch, so looks like they changed the behavior in the last update.

Can we add a "set to default" I like 3mf because I get files with different units all the time and 3mf solves the problem of needing to know.

It's not a matter of being locked in to one format or the other. Each user should be able to "set it and forget it" in their own preferences to whatever works best for their workflow. Just like we can for any other preference - ex: y-up vs z-up, directx vs opengl, auto-look at sketch, and so many more - which would also be annoying to have to change every single time Fusion360 restarts.

I think the question/problem clearly went over g-andresen's head.

Being able to set the default export file format is a no brainer IMO since everyone has to export their designs at some point  and having to change it each time is annoying.  At least within a given session, Fusion remembers your last export filetype but once you logout it defaults back to .3MF
