Enable Capture Design History as default

Hi,

I'm now programming 2-6 parts every day and getting caught with all the inconviences of being halfway through a sketch when I realize I don't have history enabled. I GET that this apparently uses more cpu/memory, but we literally do not a process a single part without it. Can there please be an option or pop-up ask to enable this every time I open a new part from My Computer (step files from customer)
Thanks

Check your Preferences, we are all different, but you can set Capture as default.

Might help....

I did, and always have had the design > design history set to Capture. The issue is this is NOT applied when you import a new model.

Hi,

Import from other than f3d opens without "History disabled".

@g-andresen

Did you mean, “without History enabled?”

For anyone that stumbles upon this thread in the future; this is no longer an issue! In the Jan 28th release (2025), imported models will respect your Design History preference. If your preference is set to "Enabled", imported models (STEP, IGES etc) will import with Timeline active.

Seth, where is this setting located for imports? I thought I had it enabled, but apparently not!

I have the latest update to Fusion but the feature of automatically turning on Capture Design History does not work when opening STEP files.  In the Animated GIF, I show you that Capture Design History is on in Preferences, I then open a STEP file but the Timeline does not display showing Capture Design History did not activate.

Thanks John, that's the same behavior I'm experiencing as well. I have that setting set to "Parametric", and imports still don't have "Capture Design History" enabled by default; wasn't sure if there was some other setting/checkbox that I'm missing.

I primarily import parasolid & step, both of which exhibit the same behavior.

That is pretty odd!

With the latest release this was enabled by default, and I've used it without problems since on many STEP and even X_T (parasolid) files form a number of different sources.

Either through File->open or through upload to the data panel.

On two different Windows computers.

Interesting. I've got the same settings as @jhackney1972 and am having no issue open up STEP files and have Timeline active 🤔

Funny enough, this is now working for me. I uploaded a new file (parasolid) today, and it defaulted to parametric. I went back and re-uploaded a file that a couple days ago didn't work as expected, and now it defaulted to parametric as well.

No idea what changed, but at least it's working so far!

Seth,

I just open two STEP files and like @bwalker145, the Timeline appears as it should, with Capture Design History enabled.  What kinda of magic did you send along the Internet to fix my system. 😁  I am glad it is working and like @bwalker145 I have no idea what happened.
