Editing extrusions and workplanes WITHOUT access to history/timeline bar

Can this be done?

If I enable it, should it show features I have made when it wasn't enabled?

You can use Direct Editing techniques without timeline.

If  you enable Capture Design History - you will capture only history from that point on.

You might have missed this from @TheCADWhisperer :  "You can use Direct Editing techniques without timeline."  There is quite a bit of editing that you can doin Direct Modeling.  Press/Pull on end and side faces of an Extrude, and you can use Move to re-position a workplane (which you cannot do in timeline mode).  Those editing techniques are not as powerful as parametric editing, but when you don't have a parametric design, you can't expect the power of parametric edit.
