Do I have to separate hinges to create joints with other surfaces?

Hello, I'm pretty new here and try to figure out some basic rules of Fusion 360.

I want to create a basic cabinet with two possibilities of movement supported by hinges (imported by McMasterCarr). Somehow I don't get how I can make a relation between the hinge and the other parts, without destroying the hinge into its 3 parts. Do the hinges have to be separated in order to be joint with other surfaces?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Kind regards,

Marlene

Hi,

You create a motion-relevant joint for each function.
These can be both rotating and sliding joints.
The joints can then be set into dependence via motion link.

I create a very quick door assembly using a McMaster-Carr hinge.  I used As-Built Joints just for convivence but you can use others.  As-Built joints make turning the hinge into a useable assembly very quick.  If you have further questions please ask.  Model is attached.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately a new problem came up. I added two hinges with the same movement to one surface and when I want to animate it, it just vibrates which means something doesn't work out. Do I have to add some special relations so that I can animate the movement?

Please attach your model so the Forum users can analysis your issue.  If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model, follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section of a forum post to attach it.

You had not defined the hinge locations, so I did As Built Joints to keep them in place.  You can move both panels but not together, you have to reach the limit of one before the other will move.  You can of course animate either joint.  I labeled the two joints with my initials so you could find them.  Please note, I only worked with one hinge per motion.  When you place the other hinges on each axis, you do not need to add a joint to them, they will come along for the ride.  Model is attached.

It has been awhile since I sent the file and the Screencast, do you understand?  If so, please mark the post Accept as Solution.

Hey John,

Yes your answer was really helpful. I used your document to do the next steps but now I again have problems with the  joint relations. I wanted to fix the "Brotschneidemaschine" to the "Vorderseite" and also tried to define the movement of one part of the "Brotschneidemaschine". Unfortunately I didn't get how to solve this problem.

Thank you in advance for your help. After that I'm hopefully done asking questions 😉

First, a little Forum etiquette.  Do not use the Quick Reply icon to post a new message.  If you do, you are addressing the Forum post to YOURSELF.  You should select the post from the person you want to address, in this case me, and select the Reply icon on that post to address your post to the correct individual.  Please take a look at my post, it is addressed to you not me!

Next, you need to clean up your model when you are working.  I do this before I get started with your issue in my Screencast.  You will enjoy Fusion 360 a lot more.

Next, Fusion 360 cannot handle you dragging multiple joints at the same time.  Sometimes you have to drive them into place as I do in the Screencast.

Last, make sure to click on the Forum post(s) that have solved your issues and then click the Accept as Solution icon to close it and help others to find the answer to similar questions.

Your model is attached.  Turn off some of those Joints, they are cluttering up your model!
