Cut out sides of a loft

Greetings,

I am trying to figure out out to cut out the sides of a loft but have not been successful.  Is there an easy way to do this?

Attached is an idea of what I'm looking to do.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply.  That is exactly what I want to do.  I'm following your steps but I'm stuck at selecting the interior of my freehand sketch.  Therefore if I try to extrude a hole I only get the line walls.  Perhaps there is a way to define the freehand sketch as a solid?

Not the sketch just the right Tool,  you are so close, 

Yeah, yours works but is more steps to get it done that way, 

You can keep that Surface Extrude, then Split the body with it as the cutter, and hide / Remove the window pane, or the way I did it was one step, done.

The difference - my Extrude icon is blue, yours is / will be orange, swap to solid area for this Extrude, and the preview will be a red cut Extrude as you need it.

Yep you can swap areas like that to be efficient.  Just as I have gone back to surface to make the top / bottom disc, before the Thicken.

Hi Dave,

I have to ask.  For the life of me I cannot figure out how to cut out the hole.  Would it be too much to ask for you to clip a quick video of your steps?
