Creating an external Assembly (not just a component)?

Hi all,

Thank you for reading this. Recently I needed to create an external Assembly (from an Assembly "inside" a project). The way I can deal with it now is to export the Assembly as a STEP file, then upload it as a new project.

Is there a more straightforward way of doing this?

Thank you.

You can select a component or component group (assembly) in the browser, right-click and then select "save copy as". That will save the component or component group to the data panel,.

Depending on how disciplined you were in following Fusion 360 R.U.L.E #1   and avoiding unintended references between components, you might end up with a number for yellow icons in the timeline of the "saved-as" assembly.

Thank you for your response. Sorry, I should have clarified:

So midPort part is the part I'm trying to turn into an "external assembly." The goal is to then be able to insert that assembly in different projects. As you can see, this assembly itself has a bunch of linked components.

What you are trying to do, CAN be done with save-copy-as, but that will not keep this liked to the originating design.

However, you can create->derive this assembly into other designs.

You could also derive it into it's own file and then link that file into other assemblies.

Quite a few options here, with different consequences 😉

I see, thank you! Quick follow up questions:

In this component, as you can see, I got some linked components. Would deriving this part preserve those links?

Also, let's say my goal is to derive this component to its own file, but I want the "master component" to be that file, not the current one (so that if I change anything in the new file, the current one will change accordingly and not the other way around). Would the 'derive' functionality be able to do this?
