Converting STL Mesh Files to Editable Solid Bodies in Fusion 360 (School Project)

Hi all,

I'm currently working on a school project where I need to modify an existing design created by a former student. For this project, I received a folder containing multiple STL files.

Importing the STL files into Fusion 360 works fine, but I’m having trouble converting the mesh models into solid bodies. The “prismatic” conversion option is unavailable, and the only option I can use is the "faceted" conversion. This leaves the models made up of a very large number of triangles, which makes them extremely difficult to edit or work with.

Because of this, I’m struggling to properly adjust the design and continue with the project.

Is there another way to convert STL or mesh files into clean, editable solid bodies in Fusion 360? Or are there alternative tools or workflows you would recommend for handling complex mesh files like this?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I've just posted them in a reply on this topic. I thought I was responding to your message, but it seems I wasn't.

Hi,

It is possible to create new solids from mesh bodies using special actions (e.g., mesh section sketches), but STL, for example, is an output format for 3D printing and is not intended for subsequent processing.
In my opinion, the desire for a “clean,” editable body corresponds to the idea that a fired ceramic body could be transformed into a formable state.

The box and a couple of other files can be converted with the Prismatic option. But those are also very easy to redesign from scratch using Fusion's native modeling tools.

Files are attached.

The rest require a mixture of modeling skills including trimming bits off the .stl. Remeshing, T-Spline editing and remodeling the "mechanical" interface(s).

Thanks for the files. I’m not very experienced with 3D modeling yet, but I’ll give it a try using your input and some help from YouTube.
