converting files from DWG or STL to STP

I'm trying to create a .stp file for a a collaborator who is using Solidworks. I have an original file in either .dwg or .stl to work from. So far I can import the .stl but it creates a .stp that cannot be edited. The .dwg file I can open and edit in AutoCad but when I import into Fusion 360 I'm not given an option to insert the file into a current drawing. I've already purged the .dwg file. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you,

The Stl file format is a mesh format. You have to convert it to Nurbs surface then export to step.

But, I have a better idea. Open the dwg in Autocad. Go to Files> Export> Other format.

Then choose Iges format and export it.

Import the iges file in Fusion 360 to see if everything seems alright. Then you can convert it to step in fusion or you can send the iges to the solidworks user. He can open that either.

I can give that a try. Would you mind trying to convert it too so I can see if my try gets to the same result? I've never used an Iges format. Is there a way to send it to you without posting publicly?
