So I finally figured out the cause of what seemed like random crashing.
Network location credentials.
Lets say you tend to save or load from a network server. That server requires you to authenticate with username and password. That location then becomes the default since it was the last place you saved, for example.
Next day you launch your workstation. You have *not yet* logged into the server so you are not authenticated.
As soon as you do anything that requires a file dialog like "export STL" or "import mesh" - that dialog tries to open to the saved server folder that you don't have authentication to access. {long pause of Fusion360.... Crash}
