Cannot select smaller faces for shell

I want to shell this shape with only top faces removed. (first image)

However once I click on shell, it doesn't let me select individual smaller faces and only allows me to select entire face going around (second image)

Is there a way to get around this?

Can you File>Export your *.f3d file to your local drive and then Attach it here to a Reply?

Did you turn off Tangent Chain selection?
