Cannot delete items in the timeline

There is a similar question out there about selecting items in a timeline however I have a slightly different issue and was wondering if it could be solved.

I have a large project that I have been working on a lot. Some of the components I created I no longer needed so I deleted them. It warned that it would affect the timeline and that was fine as I _thought_ that they (the timeline entries) would be no longer associated to the component (and thus not be shown with a component colour swatch). This would make it easy to select and delete them. 

I was right on the first bit, the timeline items are no longer colour keyed (Refer image). The problem is that I cannot delete them either, they seem to be zombies and cannot do anything with them. I also tried rolling the timeline back to just before the zombie items but still cannot delete them.

Is there a way to nuke these? From what I can tell thus far it seems to have no impact on my model, just like cleaning up where I can.

Hi,

My recommendation instead of delete:
Right click + Remove
This way the component disappears but its relation to other elements remains.
