cannot create flat pattern

Why can't I create a flat pattern of the dome in the attached model ?

The flat pattern "mode" opens, but with an error (which, btw, is not copied when I click the copy button):

There is really no way to get this to flatten. Its not a 'true' sheet metal object in so far as Fusion is concerned. The method used for creating it does not show any bends - which are imperative for sheet metal function. 

I understand it's something possible in the real world. its not possible to create this in Fusion sheet metal and have it make a flat pattern.
