Building this surface

Hello, I'm trying to build this surface (screenshot attached)
My biggest pain point is mainly the bottom half, where the main body curves into the lower portion of the "upper" part.

How would I create a seamless body transition here?

Sure, be forewarned, it's in very early stage of build where I'm trying different things. So don't laugh too hard.
