Broken - browser thumbnails

In my workspace I have several files that have broken thumbnails.  You cannot see the thing in the browser tree.  I've tried saving, resaving, updating a linked component (only some with the issue have linked components), and clearing cache.  This issue persists cross different PC's, and it is also broken in the online view.

How can I fix these?

e.g. see "Caster MountAssy" in tree below

FWIW, I tried to fix the latest thumbnail broken file I had, (same file as before, renamed to "DuctCollector System (90)").  I tried an export then import new version.  What a mess that made.  It caused a duplication of every linked component file and the duplicates were ghost links.  They were not linked to my file, nor any other file.  Looking at their properties they showed no references to/from anything else, but they would not delete.  I had to figure out which of the pair was the "real" linked file, and do a workaround (archive/delete) to get rid of all the duplicates.  And after all that, thumbnail still broken.

Any progress on this?

@scott.horton7KAQV Scott, I am working on that file for you. I have a way to get it to work but need to figure out what is the easiest way to replace what you have now.

I need some more time. I will certainly circle back here .

@scott.horton7KAQV I have the thumbnail working. It seems like the root component the png file that we generate is not getting loaded and it comes out as a zero file size. This is the reason why you are not able to see the thumbnail. I am not sire yet what triggers it.

I can modify the file for you or we could get on a call and I can show you exactly what is happening and how you can fix it. Let me know which works.

Also, I need another reminder on which hub you invited me to.

Prefer to know how to fix myself as it's happening enough to need to know.  If it's something that you can write out that would be great, if the only way is a call as things might go wrong, I can do that.

Not sure what you mean by "hub" or how to look it up.  Let me know and I'll get it for you.  This is the web address of the project where the file is located:

@scott.horton7KAQV I can share how to fix this using .7z downloader. Somehow the root preview is getting corrupted and going to zero file size. It would still be good to understand why so many of your files are getting into this state. I will try to share a video or a series of images on how to do this.

It starts with downloading and installing .7z downloader.

Still failing occasionally.  This time, the only sequence I can think of that could have caused it was these projects were opened on my laptop, laptop went into sleep mode while project was opened.  Woke laptop and finished work/exited.  Opened on my desktop, thumbnails were broken.

@scott.horton7KAQV In the workflow you defined is the thumbnails broken only on desktop or it appears broken even on the laptop? It should have been broken even on the laptop is my guess but this is where I want to start.

On the laptop, if you go into Help - support and diagnostics- service utility - Get system info - can you please attach the Fusiondiagnosticdata.zip file please?

I opened F360 on the laptop and there, only one of the 2 broken projects had a missing thumbnail:

Back on the desktop, both still broken:

Neither show correctly on the Web interface.

And, in the FWIW department, the laptop mentioned in the last post is a freshly loaded laptop, different than the laptop I used WAY back at the start of this thread.  So, at least the laptop hardware is different, problem persists.

@scott.horton7KAQV Thanks for the logs.

Looking at the LED light mount for example, on the laptop on the laptop is version 5 with the thumbnail. On the desktop it is Version 6 without the thumbnail. So the thumbnail went missing for this one on the desktop and not necessarily on the laptop.

For the other one DustBinFullalarm, both v4 on the laptop and v5 on the desktop does not have the thumbnail.

Would it be possible for you to invite me into the project again? raj.kumar.ilanchelian@autodesk.com

I opened and edited the V6 on the desktop but it was broken when it was still v5, FWIW.

Same problem here. Searched the web for a solution, didn't find one. Will be following this thread. Mine went missing from v12 (24th oct.) to v13 (25th oct.) Was there an update at that time?

Also, I can't seem to delete two files that are not referenced anywhere, but still can't delete ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have the same problem with thumbnails. The bug is still not fixed and it happens more and more often that thumbnails are missing.

Did it again.  This time there was no switching between PC's, no updates happened in the middle of it.  This has gotten old.  Year and a half and still fails sporatically.  @RajkumarIlanchelian somewhere back in this thread you were going to show me how to fix myself by uncompressing the file.  That never happened.  If Autodesk can't fix it, can we revisit that please, so I can?

Hey @scott.horton7KAQV !

I have had the same problem as all of you guys on some of my designs. I came to this thread in search for a solution. It was kind of a downer to see that despite the best efforts of Raj and the Fusion engineering team there does not seem to be a definitive fix for the seemingly random corruption that happens to some of our project files.

I do think however, that i managed to figure out how to get the thumbnail back, once a project file is corrupted.

The breadcrumbs Raj left in this thread, led me to the witches house so to speak. 😉

So here is what i did to fix my project files and have Fusion generate preview thumbnails for them again:

( Step 0 might NOT be NECESSARY for this fix to work. I did not need to do it, as I already found the project files in the Fusion 360 AppData Folder on my SSD. I just could not remember if i had manually added them to the offline cache some other time. So in case that the files are missing on your HDD / SSD, you might have to do step 0 upfront. )

0. In Fusion right-click on a project file or folder entry in the Data Panel and select "Add to offline Cache"

1. In Fusion:

  • click on the clock near the Profile Icon in the upper right corner and switch Fusion to Offline Mode
  • Close Fusion

2. In Windows Explorer:

a) navigate to "C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\[F360-ID]\W.login\F" on your HDD / SSD (the parts in [...] are placeholders)

b) Right-click on a .f3d file of a project that needs fixing and select "open with" a file compression tool like 7-Zip

3. In 7-Zip:

a) navigate to the "\FusionAssetName[Active]\Previews\" SubFolder in the Project File ( in this case the [Active] is literally part of the folder name)
b) delete the zero byte png-file "small.png" that you find in that folder.
c) Close 7-Zip.

4. Back in Fusion:

a) Open the project and do some minor changes (i just skipped one step back and forward again in the timeline)
b) Save and Close the project. This should now actually generate the new Thumbnail
c) Switch Fusion 360 back to Online Mode. This should sync the files between the offline cache and the Autodesk Cloud with the local files now taking precedence and replacing the still broken files in the cloud.

I can imagine that this or something similar is also what Raj wanted to show you. I sincerely hope it helps to fix your project files as well!

Have a nice sunday ya'll!
Greetz, Colin
