Hey @scott.horton7KAQV !
I have had the same problem as all of you guys on some of my designs. I came to this thread in search for a solution. It was kind of a downer to see that despite the best efforts of Raj and the Fusion engineering team there does not seem to be a definitive fix for the seemingly random corruption that happens to some of our project files.
I do think however, that i managed to figure out how to get the thumbnail back, once a project file is corrupted.
The breadcrumbs Raj left in this thread, led me to the witches house so to speak. 😉
So here is what i did to fix my project files and have Fusion generate preview thumbnails for them again:
( Step 0 might NOT be NECESSARY for this fix to work. I did not need to do it, as I already found the project files in the Fusion 360 AppData Folder on my SSD. I just could not remember if i had manually added them to the offline cache some other time. So in case that the files are missing on your HDD / SSD, you might have to do step 0 upfront. )
0. In Fusion right-click on a project file or folder entry in the Data Panel and select "Add to offline Cache"
1. In Fusion:
- click on the clock near the Profile Icon in the upper right corner and switch Fusion to Offline Mode
- Close Fusion
2. In Windows Explorer:
a) navigate to "C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\[F360-ID]\W.login\F" on your HDD / SSD (the parts in [...] are placeholders)
b) Right-click on a .f3d file of a project that needs fixing and select "open with" a file compression tool like 7-Zip
3. In 7-Zip:
a) navigate to the "\FusionAssetName[Active]\Previews\" SubFolder in the Project File ( in this case the [Active] is literally part of the folder name)
b) delete the zero byte png-file "small.png" that you find in that folder.
c) Close 7-Zip.
4. Back in Fusion:
a) Open the project and do some minor changes (i just skipped one step back and forward again in the timeline)
b) Save and Close the project. This should now actually generate the new Thumbnail
c) Switch Fusion 360 back to Online Mode. This should sync the files between the offline cache and the Autodesk Cloud with the local files now taking precedence and replacing the still broken files in the cloud.
I can imagine that this or something similar is also what Raj wanted to show you. I sincerely hope it helps to fix your project files as well!
Have a nice sunday ya'll!
