Broken - browser thumbnails

In my workspace I have several files that have broken thumbnails.  You cannot see the thing in the browser tree.  I've tried saving, resaving, updating a linked component (only some with the issue have linked components), and clearing cache.  This issue persists cross different PC's, and it is also broken in the online view.

How can I fix these?

e.g. see "Caster MountAssy" in tree below

If you click on the red arrow indicated icon and view the CasterMountAssy component on the Web Database, do you see the icon?  If not, while in the Web Database, update the component preview and see it that helps.

You do not see the icon when viewing on the web.  Clicking on "view" as shown with your arrow, properly shows a preview of the part.  I don't see any explicit "update component preview" option.

Can you confirm if you do a save of that assembly for example, is the version updating but you are not seeing the thumbnail update?

Can you go to Help - about and see which version of Fusion you are on?

Yes. Saving updates the version but the thumb remains broken. I can revert to a previous version where the thumb is ok and that fixes it. But if I revert back to latest version or a new one it’s broken again. Whatever happened to the file it carry’s forward.

@scott.horton7KAQV Sorry for the delay in response.

Would it be possible to invite me into your project? raj.kumar.ilanchelian@autodesk.com

Also, can you confirm the version of Fusion 360 you are on?

@scott.horton7KAQV Thank you for the invite. Yes, please give me write access without which I can't do much :). I will not be making any saves to it but will need to look into some properties to see why it is not adding thumbnails.

Done.  I had others in this state but for them I just reverted to older versions before it was broken.  This is not the first time it's happened, so it would be good to find the issue and solution.  You'll be able to look at versions of this one that both have the icon and some that do not, after the date/time it first happened to this file.

@scott.horton7KAQV Thank you, I can see the files now and open them. I am looking at the Caster assembly and can see that V11 that was last saved in 2021 has the thumbnail and v12 was saved in September 2023 lost the thumbnail. So this is where I will start to see the difference between the two versions and see what is happening.

It's likely that will look more into this tomorrow. So likely no updates on this today, but thank you for the access. Hopefully we can find what is happening here.

@scott.horton7KAQV Scott no real update but I am working with the engineering team to understand what happened between those two versions where the thumbnail was lost. Will update here as soon as I find out more.

It's been 2 months.  Any news or progress on this?  I've got a folder with 9 occurrences in it now.

All Projects/Robotics/MHMS Parts and Assemblies/_Current..../

They keep growing

@scott.horton7KAQV My apologies for dropping the follow up here. The investigation did start out but I failed to follow through. I am going to get back to the team on this and will update you here. Once again, apologies that this took so long to get back.

@scott.horton7KAQV I have taken a look at the folder you mentioned once again and here are some more findings:

1. It seems like all the impacted ones without thumbnails are from three separate Fusion versions. Taking a look at those versions they are seem to correspond to one particular schema within those versions.

Now you don't need to know much about what is the schema version I am talking about but we had a new schema version change as part of the October update. It looks like all the files you created after essentially October 31 seems to be generating correct thumbnails.

I took one of the design that does not have a thumbnail, exported it and imported it back into the newer Fusion and they seem to generate thumbnails.

Where I am going at with all of this is:

1. Can you open on file (a stand along file that is not used in any other file to start with)
2. Run a Modify - Compute All - save

Now see if the thumbnails comes back for that model?

I can run save as well but then I don't want to create extra versions on your file without your permission.

You can resave them. Extra versions won’t hurt them.

The test did not work. I can confirm that new files are getting the thumbnail but if I save the ones that are already in this state, I cannot generate thumbnail. I will continue to investigate.

@scott.horton7KAQV

Here is one workflow that has helped recover one file so far (I tried this only on this one file to test)

1. Exported V1 of "IR system export"
2. Right click on the design in data panel and import new version
3. Now a new version of the same file is created and now it has the thumbnails too

I am confident from the October update onwards this file should not have the thumbnail issue. meaning if you edit this file again it should be able to save with the thumbnails.

I can work through each file to fix it for you if you are Ok with it. Like li said moving forward once the file is fixed, the problem should not repeat.

Since the latest update in February 2024, any file I create has no thumbnail and any file I open and save loses its thumbnail.  This is very frustrating as my naming convention in a project creates a similar name, and now I have to open each one to find out which one it is or guess by the version number of a file.
Any chance you guys are looking in to this?

@enktech We are not aware of any generic issues with thumbnail creation. More details here will help to understand what could be happening here.

1. To start with can you provide us your Fusiondiagnosticslogs.zip file? If you go into Fusion - Hlep- support and diagnostics- Fusion service utility - Gather system info - this zip will be generated.

2. If it is possible can you also invite me to your project? raj.kumar.ilanchelian@autodesk.com

Here is the diagnostics.  The project is a product under development so I can't share it that at this time.
I did go up one folder and modify and save a file and the thumbnail did not disappear.
Seems to be something in this project.
Here is a file in this project that has the same problem but doesn't give away anything. https://a360.co/3OKx66p
