Additive manufacturing: Support Warnings

Hi, 

 

I have recently begun to explore the additive manufacturing side to Fusion 360, but I am getting the following warning when trying to add supports to my model. "Warning: Raft/Skirt toolpaths have been constrained due to print bed or collisions with other parts." I have played around with the raft and skirt settings, and changed the spacing of my parts on the build plate, but nothing seems to be working. Previously I have been using Prusa and Cura slicer's. I have included a photo of my parts on the build plate.

Can you attach your models so the Forum users can experiment with them?  It is hard to tell what is going on from just a screen capture.  If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

I get that same error message, and have not been able to figure out even what it really means so I can try to solve it.  I find the Fusion360 error messages to be very inadequate, and clicking on the link at the bottom left to "Search AutoDesk" useless.  I get references to CNC machining and not anything to do with 3D printing.

Hi All,

 

So the "error" message you mention isn't an error message at all, but a warning message. The warning message is there to warn you that  your skirt toolpaths have been modified in some way so that they do not collide with either another part, the prime line, or go out of bounds.
For example, please see this image below:

I believe in your project, that the skirt is possibly overlapping with the prime line. Therefore, Fusion FFF has modified the position of the skirt toolpaths to avoid this, and let's you know via the warning.

 

You can see in the image below, that arranging the parts in this such way, gives no warning message.

Ps. @17lecp what version of Fusion are you running? When I opened your project, it seems to me that you are running an older version of Fusion which hasn't been updated for a while.

In my case the items being printed are well within the limits of the bed.  I don't know yet how to find the "prime line" to see if I am avoiding that.  Attached is a screenshot of the parts on the print bed.  I am just now getting into trying to learn the Additive Manufacturing features of F360.

Hi @mmckay ,

 

Ahh yes I can see why this is happening. So in your settings you have your setting "Skirt distance from Body" = 10mm.

However, you can see that your bodies are 10mm distance from each other, and you can see that the support structure is slightly offset from the body meaning that the body & support just about falls within this 10mm distance.

You'll find either reducing the "Skirt distance from Body" = < 5mm,  OR    moving the bodies further apart (note, you will need to make the bodies components in the design workspace first) will get rid of the warning since there will be no interaction between a body's skirt and another body or support.

Ps, the location of the prime line is auto generated in Fusion, but will usually be near the origin and the front-left of the printer (this is also where it is in your case and you can see it by simulating the toolpath)

Thanks.  I will try that.  I was able to identify the prime line with the simulation.  After my last post I tried to do just a single part print with only one half of the reed block on the print bed.  I get the same warning with a single part also.  I have tried various skirt distances from 1mm to 50mm and still have the warning.  I am trying to grasp conceptually what is going on so I will get the set ups right in the future.  Attached is the single print test file.

Ahh yes, so in this case, the skirt line for the support and the body interact, and so Fusion merges them to create a single continuous skirt around all of them.

This is not an issue at all - think of the warning in this case as a "info" pop up rather than something being wrong or an issue with your setup.

Perhaps we should disable this warning for these cases and only for when the skirt or brim's toolpaths go outside of the print area....

Hi @mmckay & @17lecp ,

 

I can confirm that due to your feedback we will be changing the behaviour of the error messages regarding constraining the bed adhesion toolpaths. In the future the error message will only be generated when these toolpaths fall outside of the print volume and therefore need to be constrained.

 

This improvement should be included in the 14th May Fusion update!
