3Dconnexion SpaceMouse Horizon Lock Constrain Orbit Missing Feature Video

Anonymous
Not applicable

This post is a final act of desperation.

In the video at the bottom of this post I describe how broken the current SpaceMouse implemetation is, and how great the device could be if these, and other problems, were resolved.

I fear it will never be fixed due to these direct quotes...

'The navigation with the SpaceMouse in Fusion 360 was implemented and is maintained by Autodesk directly.' -3Dconnexion

'Those options are controlled by the spacemouse drivers that 3Dconnexion has crafted for their support of Fusion 360.' - Autodesk

If anyone can help me work out HOW the driver and Fusion 360 communicate, please help me out. Does Fusion use the 3Dconnexion SDK to just read the axis values and control the camera transform internally to Fusion 360, OR does 3Dconnexion  remotely control the camera transform from within the driver software somehow. I assume the support is not add-in or script based. If both companies deny all responsibility for maintaining the SpaceMouse functionality, then me posting this fix and offering my code for free is all in vain. Thanks for watching!

SOUND REQUIRED:

And yes... I did actually program my own faux Fusion 360 just to show how things could, and should, be... 😂

Thanks for the update. This is great news. Unfortunately we're mostly using Macs. Are you actively working on supporting this on MacOS as well or will this be a Windows only feature?

Great question. Yes, the intention is to provide the same experience on mac and windows. One of the reasons this is under preview is because we have more work to do, like supporting mac. For now we're collecting feedback on the user experience using the windows preview.

Thanks,

I’ve wanted to come here and give my feedback for weeks.
I’m thrilled. Horizon lock works like it should!

I'm using agin my spacemouse!

Thank you Autodesk!

Great question. The intention to provide the same experience on mac has not changed. We'll be telling you all about it as soon as it's ready for preview.

Thanks Phil, is there a rough timeline for this? Are we looking at a few weeks or months?

Also, a bit off topic but what's the best way to report any bugs for MacOS?

Thanks!

I cannot comment on when software will be delivered for legal reasons. My hands are tied. I do know the intent is to provide the same experience on mac and windows and the same developers are still working on it. That's all I can say at this time. Sorry I can't be more specific.

The best way to report bugs for macOS:

  1. Search the Support forum for the issue you found.
    1. If you find an exact match, and it's less than 2 years old, add a post to the thread.
  2. If you don't find a match, create a post in the Support forum.
    1. Include macOS in the title
  3. If you are a paying customer, contact Product Support if the situation is critical.

Thanks!

There are recently released drivers, but I have no idea if they solve the issue. I haven't tested them. Let me know what you find please.

New drivers does not make any difference for me.

Fusion 360 Release 2.0.13619 does not yet include experimental features for 3dConnexion horizon lock (on MacOS).

MacOS drivers for 3D connexion devices are always notoriously behind and also offer generally fewer features.

That becomes painfully obvious if you frequently work on macOS and Windows.

Whilst the new driver doesn't fix horizon lock (presumably because SpaceMouse integration is still missing on MacOS preview features in Fusion) it does have a 'Dominant' setting in the 3dconnexion prefs which makes it much easier to use. Maybe this was present on previous drivers but I never noticed it. It's not as good as having horizon lock but it does at least allow me to use my SpaceMouse on a Mac.

I recently saw an article which mentioned that Fusion on Windows uses v4 of the SpaceMouse SDK but is still using v3 on a Mac however 3Dconnexion only offer v1.04 for a Mac so not sure how accurate that is and whether it's related. I hope Autodesk will eventually add the new SpaceMouse integration feature to MacOS, until then this will have to do.

The work is ongoing. There are a couple technical hurdles on the mac side that are taking time. Thanks for your patience while we work with 3Dconnexion to sort this out. Both sides have work to do to make this happen.
