Toolpath for vertical machining

I am trying to get a toolpath working to machine a shallow pocket partway around a cylinder.

Not having much success, best i can get in simulation is with Trace.   Is this possible?    Part will be fixed in a jig, No rotary axis as yet.

Are you going to cut setup 2 and 5 how they are orientation now?

The wrapping will not work in the orientation you have it, it has to come in from the side.

Have a look at this video it shows how to edit a toolpath haveing the toolpath as 1 section it works a lot better for the traces toolpath See this video for selecting toolpaths https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATs4rsI_TPc

The hights you have set in the toolpath will make the cutter go through the model.

Just interested in Setup 5.

What do you mean coming in from the side?

I have a working toolpath now but it is going full depth on the first path and zero on the second....

It is cutting backward this is the first time I have seen this happening.

It is the toolpath selection doing it.

Traces does not have a stepover just stepdown so it is a one-hit-wonder.

Now to get it to do 2 step-downs in the same toolpath you select the outside side edges first do the edit toolpath dialog then select the rest of the toolpath hit ok, now select the inside side edge do the edit toolpath dialog select the rest of the toolpath hit ok this should give you 2 depths that are the right way around.

Example attached.

If you have it as a single toolpath you get this

if you select like I said above you get this.

Thankyou.

With 2 passes the first only skims the part but with no depth control not much i can do about it.

Im sure i can get it to machine ok at one depth with speed and feed adjustments.

I'm confused as to why you are using the Trace toolpath and selecting the vertical portions. If you are looking to just machine that relief in a 3 axis mill, with the part standing up, 2D Contour is going to get you that, and very cleanly:

Hi Seth,

I previously tried a contour path but couldnt get it to work.

Yours certainly does!   Ive studied all the settings you have to make it work.   Thankyou!

Next Question,

How would i rotate the part to machine the opening,  I want to cut it out using the side of the tool.

Part will sit on its side, opening machined from the side in X axis.

Exactly what i had in mind!

I meant the slot in the Z axis for the setup, but worked it out.
