RAMPING INTO 2D FACE MILLING

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to face a piece of granite with a robot, but I cannot have the tool axially cut with its wide. The tool needs to ramp into the cut as it is a grind head.

Any ideas on how to do this with 2d face?

In your file, the tool is starting off of the part and it's cutting radially as it traverses across the part. I'm not seeing where it's engaged axially.. 🤔

Hi Seth,

My fault not explaining correctly. I need the face mill to ramp into the part so it starts touching the face rather than cut with the side. Is this possible?

Well, sorta?

You're always going to have some manner of axial and radial cut, right? Purely XY would be radial, ramping in XYZ would generate axial and radial loads.

We could use something like 2D Pocket and a Helical Ramp to get you the motion (I think) you're after:

But is it available in the Face toolpath? No, it is not.
