programming checklist?

does anyone else almost always forget something when making a program?

whether it be cutter comp for your finish passes, or to turn smoothing on, or to change a post setting?

I finally decided to make a little checklist, and im curious what other people do for this? i know you can save settings, like always leave smoothing to a certain number when you check it, but for now i just wanted a paper to look over every time.

what do you do to proof your program out?

Yes, in the beginning, I was always forgetting something. There are things I've done to help eliminate that:

Default Settings. This is the biggest one. All Adaptive and 3D toolpaths have had their tolerance adjusted and smoothing turned on.

Templates. Once I find a combination of settings that works really well for a given tool or part style, I create a template for it, so a lot of it is already set for me

Not really, sorry. It's just one of those things that you learn as you go along, adding and subtracting from the list as needed.

@CuttingEdgeManufacturing

Its all relevant to the kind of work you're doing in my opinion, certain materials and jobs may demand a more precise checklist than others, so its pretty hard to have a uniform checklist which works for everyone.

Here is what I have used in the past:

Programming Checklist

  • Review Traveler
  • Workholding
  • Tolerances/Comp
  • WCS
  • Feed & Speed
  • Tool Numbers/duplicates
  • Heights
  • Operation order (tool)
  • Simulation
  • Deburr

+1 for templates... especially if you have multiple users with different levels of experience (we're a fab shop... lots of very clever folks, but not everyone has formal modeling or CNC experience)

John Saunders has done a bunch of YouTube videos at NYC CNC on both cloud libraries and templates. May or may not apply directly, but might offer some good ideas.
