Need help with op to machine radius bottomed slot.

Hello Forum,

 

I have a bracket that I need to machine a radiused bottom shallow slot down one length. The part is machined otherwise. I have tried 2D contour and was not getting what I wanted. I need the tool path to go straight through the slot so as the slot is open at both ends of the blank I've made. I expect there is some setting or path selection I am getting wrong. Using .375 2 flute ball mill in 6061 Aluminum. Picture and file attached. Thanks. Jgaertner

You cannot use 2D toolpath to machine 3D feature, try Parallel or Scallop.

Thank you for your help. Is it not possible to select the existing model to have Fusion machine this slot? If I understand your sample, you created a new plane, drew a surface on that plane that is not part of the part and then selected that new surface as the contour/profile to be machined? Seems like one should be able to do this with the existing model? I do know you have to draw machining boundaries some times... Jgaertner

Yes, it is possible to use main model, I encountered some issues when attempting to drive tool past edges and fiddling with options did not please my fancy so I made offset of groove surface without adding any value to it.

I then extended edges past main model, constructed sketch and extrude it to cut off round side of new surface.

I then selected that surface as model in setup to get strait passes overlapping main model edges without tool path spilling over into goofy motions.

I sure wish one could program with Fusion without adding all these extra sketches. If I were doing this on a manual mill I could just machine past the stock and reverse paths with a new offset. I am trying to learn how to use Fusion

since its the tool I have"bought". But it seems to have some issue with doing very simple operations. But so does SolidWorks. Thanks again for your help. 3 hours to learn how to mill a radiused slot?   Jgaertner

In my experience all CAD/CAM software has issues, some perceived and some actual impairments and yet they all have some advantage in their core layout.

The fact is that Fusion with all its bugs and awkwardness has served me well in past 3 years but that may be related to personal outlook and prior experience with other software.

I admit Fusion was not easy to adjust to in my first few weeks of use, Youtube videos and AD documentation helped some but I was mostly self taught by messing with options and building on small discoveries.

 

To this day I think Fusion is flooded with too much junk that poses issues when particular settings conflict with each other but that is likely the price to pay for having wide range of options and software covering multiple fields.
