I need to mill a mould using stock as solid part. stock solid part also is a mould.

I used insert option to import the my stock as a STL file.

  • my problem is placing this insert stl part correct position. because there is no any option surface align by mate option or similar option.
  • are you agree the method I used for re-machining mould. or is their is proper method to complete this task easier.

Thanks

Hi @Anonymous ! If you're having trouble placing a part at the the correct position, we use Move/Copy and Joint commands for that. Here is how you do it using the Joint command - https://autode.sk/3hajq2D

You can also select the type of Joint from the menu. I did it with the default (Rigid) joint in this case.
Drop a like if it helps 😊

@dikshant. while that generally works, that does not work with an .STL file.

Currently, there are no methods to accurately align STL files that I'm aware of. However, there are tools coming in the future that would aid in this issue.

@Anonymous is the STL model one that you want to machine, or representative of the stock that you're working with. Can you share your file?

Hi @seth.madore  thanks for your valuable reply.

let me explain my process.

i am using Creo parametric for my cad design and currently I am validating the CAM software for purchasing. I love Fusing 360 but above issue is the big problem to me.

milling part = xxx.prt (ceo part)

stock for re milling = can be .stl / .igs. /.step / or creo part file. (can out any kind of file using creo)

I will share the file my files. I assemble part and mesh the using insert option. it is ok for this file.

But I need simply solution for align side surface and bottom surface then need to drag the stock to top direction.

Hope you have solution ...😍

Thanks

There is a way to aline the .stl and solid with a joint.

If you do the .stl in a base feature so design-create-base feature-insert mesh(also turn the origin on for a visual showing that the part is moving) then flip up direction so Z is up but upside down then rotate it 180 make sure it is 180 not -180-center-move to ground-ok-finish base feature this should put the origin dead center bottom of the .stl.

Then with the solid in its own file create components from body-activate it then put a joint origin on the bottom center of the part.

Then copy past new the component created from the step above into the file with the .stl in it then apply a joint from the sold to the joint origin on the origin and the parts are alined center bottom.

All this gives you this hope it helps example attached

One thing with fusion there are ways to do stuff no one has found they make some really good mistakes at times that don't cause a problem at all and help to get stuff done so basically try anything even silly-sounding ideas. All I have done is put two ideas together and the outcome is 2 parts in the same places where one can be moved in any direction with a simple lightweight edit.

Hi ALL

I worked with you proposed method and its was working, But I got error while crating roughing programme.  if programme detect Collison software is stuck and closed. I could not skip this  there foe I have attached my file for your refence. I tried with .STL and .OBJ for my stock. but same issue was happen. sometime this can be happen since my design complex or some reason. but in my work flow I cant go back  for design modification due to time limitation. hope Fusion 360 has some solution for this that I still don't know.

Thanks

Do you have on what the arrow is pointing to in the pic.

@seth.madore Can you have a look at this, please.

I have done a double-check and automatic in-process stock generation seems to be what is wrong it is on my end anyway

@daniel_lyall I'm not getting any crashing or hanging of the software. I'm using the file that's attached earlier in the thread (male v12)
