Fairly new to Fusion, and having trouble getting a grasp of it, in multiple ways. I have decades of experience on GibbsCam and FeatureCam, and can hand program without issue. 

Most other Cam systems, you pick a material for the part, and the system pulls the speeds and feeds you set up in the material library. Seems that Fusion doesn’t work that way, and my Google searching leads to people making different tool libraries for each material. 

Is that what most do? Massive lists of different tool libraries? One for carbon, one for 3xx series, one for 4xx series, one for aluminum, one for copper, etc, etc? Or, do you just wing it on the fly with one tool library, and a calculator?

Hi

 

You don't need a different library for each material

You can create feed and speed presets for each tool :

Currently Fusion does nothing with the material selected on the part, you just have to pick the appropriate  preset for your tool when you select it.

So every single tool will have its own individual material library, and would need to be selected when the tool is used. 20 tools on the part, 20 times selecting the material?

Hi @m_lamarca,

 

At the moment " YES" you have to select each cutting preset of each tool.

(it's the same as selecting a tool out of a specific material library)

 

But, they have plans/discussions to at material groups to it.

So that you can select for example the setup, what kind of material it is made of so that the preset automatically can be selected.

So for that, we have to wait for what the future will bring.

Just to clear up any misunderstanding:

1) Material selected in Design has no impact on tool speeds and feeds.

2) In your tool library, you can define speed and feed presets, and then when you select the tool, you have the option of changing to a different preset when you're in the toolpath (you can also select the tool and preset by double clicking on the preset in question when selecting your tool)

I second the idea of having a feature where one can apply a material, say 6061 aluminum to a body or component, then when it comes time to CAM, I select the tool and the initial feeds and speeds are set based on the material. Since there are a zillion different materials in the design space perhaps you should add a feature that if I apply "6061" to my part, that will assign the "6061" feeds and speeds for each particular tool. Maybe even add the ability to create custom materials which are then able to be linked to tools. For example, mostly everything I create CAM for is wood. Wood is woefully under represented in Fusion 360. I have to manually tweaky for each tool, but it would sure be nice to be able to select a black walnut material and have it automatically apply the feeds and speeds for that material to all of my tools. I'm sure you see where I'm going here. 

And I second the motion for having a built in feeds and speeds calculator that maybe gives an option to choose how aggressive you want to be with the cut. Just spit balling here.

simply add a Black Walnut setting to your tool library then, but as you'll find with experience that most woods can be run the same. It's not like the next piece out of turkish walnut will need other feeds.

I've ran a LOT of exotics with very similar speeds and feeds.
