ID Profiling Tool

How would you go about defining this tool in fusion for ID turning? I've tried tricking it a few ways but it's not really doing what I want.

I do a ton of profiling on the inside with tools like this and end up having to hand write the code and it's kind of annoying to have to hand write the paths with many new parts.

I needed to use a boring bar with a DCMT tip recently and the best I could come up with was this. @akash.kamoolkar Is there any work being done to improve creating boring bars like this. Back cutting ones are also a problem.

Don't know if you could create a custom tip to get something like the bar in your example. There is the problem of the bar going past the tip, but I was working on a part with a through hole so it didn't matter.

PS please paste images into your posts as it's easier to help when you can read the text and see the image.

This is actually a better question to pose to the Tool Library team, not the Turning team (although it's understandable that one would correlate Turning tools with the Turning team). I know @martha.deans and her dev team are keen on providing better solutions for all types of turning tools, but there are other higher priority projects on the docket at the moment.

Thanks Seth!

We are indeed working through some foundational changes to make improvements to turning tools! It's all been a lot stickier than we would have liked, and taking longer to deliver but it is still in the works.

@Mrwetwork do you have any thoughts around your ideal process to create tools like this? Is the only information available from the vendor the parameters or do they give you some additional artifacts you could use like a profile or a model? (Or feel free to link to the tool page and I can poke around 🙂

What other types of turning tools do you use that Fusion doesn't handle well?

Well, it’s just an ID grooving tool that’s a triangle instead of round or
square.

So ideally we’d have a tip radius option as well as an angle. This one
happens to be 45 degrees but they come in a variety of angles.

Can you share an example at a different angle? Would the types of parameters available when creating a threading insert work well do you think?

Here is an example of a tool with a 45 degree profile and a 60 degree profile. (Fig a)

Yes, this could be beneficial for threading, threading currently needs work. You only have options for two of the standard threading types and anyone having to thread clear up to a tall shoulder is left in the dust. Something straight on and super simple would work similar to what we're talking about for OD as well. (Fig b)  It's super simple functionality like this that is missing and causing myself and several people I know to migrate from the platform.

What tool is being represented by Figure B? While it looks like a multi-tip thread tool, the profile is not one I'm familiar with.
