Groove on an angle (Turning)

Got a quote to do for a couple dozen parts that are a cakewalk, except they have a OD groove on a 30 degree angle.

anyone have a clue how to program this for lathe?

You might be able to drive a Groove toolpath with a sketch. Could you share the print or a model?

i can share what i have drawn up sure. but i actually couldn't model it correctly to the print. its confusing as can be. but the groove is the main thing here so ill send what i have.

If it`s only a couple of dozen then run the shape off on the CNC and go dust off the old Manual Lathe in the corner and use the Compound Slide to wind a square end tool in by hand at the correct angle, only a minute or so each once set up 🙂 🙂 🙂

Hope you didn`t scrap that old Manual beastie just to get the space ???  😞

we have more manuals than CNC's in our lathe department haha. 2 old clausings and a couple other smaller engine lathes. just hoping to skip the manual process. Might go that route though.. Thanks!

@CuttingEdgeManufacturing You can apply a tool orientation angle to the grooving tool in the operation in a grooving strategy and it should do angled grooving.

Are you planning on using an angled groove tool to cut that?

i think i just planned on a normal tool put in the tool post on an angle. and then feeding in both x and z

For stuff like this, Fusion is really too painful to bother with, you could spend all day on it and get nowhere. Write the code manually and insert it into the program with the Manual NC function, it'll take you 15 mins and it'll be done. I find it helps if you use a CAD sketch of the groove geometry around a centreline, tool geometry and where you want it to start/stop moving to as a result.

So the tool orientation angle works pretty well, but it messes up the zero corner of the tool, and places it in a weird position.  Is there anyway to have the outside tangent edges be the zero?

@natecMBHZF are you looking for the "Use opposite edge" parameter in the setup tab of the tool library?
