Generative design - how long does it take to generate?

Hi there,

I'm thinking of proposing that my company utilises fusion 360's generative design feature, but couldn't find any information on how long the computation typically takes. Could someone who has used it give me a ballpark range? Or would it vary very greatly based on part size, number of materials/manufacturing methods chosen?

Also, I found a coursera course on generative design but it seemed targeted towards utilizing generative design for 3d printing. Does anyone know if autodesk has made any training material for utilizing generative design for traditional manufacturing methods?

The course I found: https://www.coursera.org/specializations/autodesk-generative-design-manufacturing#courses

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Hi @colin.ngNB7PC,

It really is how long is a piece of string. (Twice as long as half of it)

This is completely talking from my limited experience. Most of the studies I tend to do take 2 ish hours to start showing results that will resemble the finished article. And then about 4-5 hours to completely finish. Again I am no GD expert and this is just from myself playing with it. I have had cases reduced dramatically for simple geometry.

I try to put a study on first thing when I get to work, that way I have something before I leave. I can then make tweaks if I need to and put another study to run while I'm home overnight, ready for the next morning. A bit like an apprentice who doesn't moan 🙂

I hope this was at least slightly helpful in regards to time scales.

Hi Richard,

I had a feeling it would vary quite a bit, so yes your answer really helps! At least it gives me an idea of the order of magnitude of time I'd have to wait - not days for each small study and also not to expect that the study finishes in minutes.

Thank you so much!
