Can't set side compensation on trace path

i use trace quite a lot but now i'm running into a problem setting the compensation. Instead of switching the compensation from the inside of the curve to the outside of the curve it will only change direction but still trace on the outside of the curve. Not sure what's going on and how to fix it.

Can't share the file cause it's a production file. Here's a screencast of the problem:

The curve was generated using 'Include 3d geometry' for the curvy sides and then connecting the end points with a line to close the loop. I only connected the endpoints because the single curves would have the same problem and i thought closing the loop might fix it. Ands i only made these sketch curves in the first place because i couldn't select the proper edges from the model (because of a filet on the edge it wouldn't let me and selected random curves)

Set the compensation to Left(climb milling ) ,then to change which side of the contour you want to mill on, click the Red direction arrow near the Blue contour

Changing compensation from left to right isn't the correct way to switch the side of the contour to mill on
