CAM will not select ANY contours

Hi Wiser-ones,

Greetings for Australia!

I appear to have broken something in the attached model - after jumping around in the timeline to create a second part, I can no longer select any contour in any mode to generate CAM tool paths.

I can also not edit the two existing toolpaths. I can't select anything!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - either settings I should change or strategies to export or rescue the components into a version that CAM will talk nicely with.

Hi @TecsolAus,

I don't know about what you mean that notting seems to work anymore?

I changed the existing toolpaths

- More holes for drilling

- Larger StepDown for Adaptive

- Created a new toolpath.

Can you be more specific.

Thanks for such a fast reply Marco!

I just tried exactly the same process that I’ve been doing all afternoon, but with the f3d file you tested. I can now select contours, holes etc in CAM mode! What is odd is that I tried doing a local f3d save and reopen earlier, and the problem was still there.

I have just opened the original model from the Autodesk server, and that now works as well. I wonder if closing and reopening Fusion made a difference? This happened once before and I gave up for the day, but when I came back to the job a few days later I was able to work on the toolpaths.

Cheers,

James

It's happening again!

I machined a test part, and then came back and made required changes. This was mainly editing up and down the timeline by filling in areas, deleting shapes and cutting tools. Now when I go back to generate a tool path, I can't select any contours. I can create:

* 3d adaptive clearing

* drill toolpath.

I can't do 2D adaptive, clearing or countour. It's as if there are no contours in the model. Likewise if I try 2D Adaptive clearing, no pockets can be selected.

Last time this happened, the model appeared to "fix itself" after being saved and reopened, but no luck with this strategy so far... I'd be very grateful for any advice about making this model machinable, and how to diagnose and/or avoid this issue in the future.

Cheers.

I'm able to apply toolpaths of any sort to the model. I'm not seeing your issue. Any chance you could make a Screencast to demonstrate the issue?

Try opening up the .f3d file that you shared. Curious if the behavior changes any..

Re: CAM will not select ANY contours

Hi, thanks for looking at this.

It’s very strange, and not the first time this has happened. I reopened the
file stored on Autodesk’s server this morning and did exactly what I had
been doing yesterday. (The inability to draw a box over an area to bulk
select contours has given me lots of practice at picking them!) The
contours for 2D contours are now all available for selection! Yesterday as
I hovered the cursor over the model nothing was available to select. The
.f3d file also works now.

This is the same behaviour that led to my first post starting this thread.
It also mysteriously came good a day later. Seeing the .f3d file has not
changed, this makes me wonder if something is being cached or “stuck” in fusion
360? I quit and restarted the program a couple of times yesterday which didn
’t help. There is a pattern emerging of not being able to select elements
for toolpath generation following model editing which comes good the
following day. This has also happened 2 or 3 times before I approached the
forum, but I didn’t spot the pattern. Next time I’ll reboot the computer as
a test.

Cheers,

James Dean

@TecsolAus one thing to try take the computer offline and restart it and fusion offline, this sometimes works and yes it sounds stupid but works sometimes, or just turning the net off can work.

Something could all so be hoging the focus.

Re: CAM will not select ANY contours

Hello, You are correct.

After editing a similar model I was unable to select contours. I saved a
file to the local machine and pulled out the Ethernet cable.

After restarting Fusion offline I was able to select the contours. Plugging
back in to the network didn’t cause any issue.

I don’t think we can call this problem completely solved, but hopefully it’s
defined enough for Autodesk to get to work on it! And we have a work-around.

It has been around for years it is near imposable to find the problem they have tried time and again.

The files are stored locally for the amount of time you have set for your cache.
