2D Adaptive Clearing Rest Machining

Hey all,

 

I'm running a large part and programming it using Fusion.  It's not the most complex machining I'm just having issues getting it to finish some small radiuses in 3 corners of 2 different pockets.  5 of the corners have a radius callout of .630".  The other 3 have a call out of .190".  I finished the pockets with a .625" endmill, now I want to go in and finish the smaller radii with my .250" endmill but when I try to use rest machining with a .625" previous diameter it goes and makes lead in moves on the larger radii, but doesn't look like it's actually cutting anything.  If I drop my previous tool diameter down to .500" it doesn't do it.  I've tried different minimum corner radii, leads, and get basically the same result.  I attached a few screen shots of my program settings and what the tool is doing.  Let me know if anyone has run into this before!  Appreciate any help..

Without seeing the file my guess would be that the 0.625 tool plus some "Stock to leave" is leaving a bigger Radius than the 0.500 tool so the Rest Machining is "seeing" that excess material and goes to remove it, the smaller tool doesn`t leave as much material ?? 🙂 🙂

It's in 2D Adaptive.  It doesn't look at the previous operation and material left, it uses a tool diameter to recognize where material would be left.  a .625" wouldn't leave any material in the other corners, also it doesn't try to touch anything but the corners.

Without seeing your file, I would advise following a larger tool 2D adaptive with a smaller tool 3D adaptive to "clear" the rest material contained by the pocket boundary. I've always had issues getting designated rest material to clear by using that dialog whereas having the software be able to "see" the remaining material on the 2nd operation usually knocks it out no problem

 

I'm with engineguy something is messing with the stock to leave and making it think it needs to drop there without any material to clear, using a model aware option here with rest machining should make it work as intended

Yeah, I couldn't find a good solution, not to sure what the cause is, or if it's just some bugs in the system.  My work around was to just use 3D Adaptive and Contour with a 5/8" endmill and then the 3D adaptive with the 1/4" endmill  with rest machining and it worked the way I wanted it to.
