What is exactly pierce clearance

Hello. I have a CNC Plasma Cutter and I use Fusion 360 to Design and Manufacture. When I create a 2D Profile cut, I always go to the Leads window and enter the machine's suggested parameters from the manufacturer.

However, what is the meaning of Pierce Clearance? I cannot see any difference on the generated toolpath when I change this setting.

Hi @manoweb If you hover your mouse over that field without clicking, you will get the tooltip that explains what it does. Does the tooltip help?

IIRC the last time I checked this value had no impact on the toolpath generated by Fusion and also IIRC none of the post-processors used the value either. But things may have changed since then or you may find a use for it in a custom post-processor.

Yes, it does make a difference and as far as I can see it is "Expected Behaviour".

It would appear that it only comes into operation when the "Center" option is used, that would be the only time it is required as Left/Right selection will move the start point 🙂 🙂

I tried to generate a toolpath with center compensation and there is absolutely no impact I can see, it stays literally the same even if I put in a huge value

1) Did you re-generate the Path ?

2) Did you have a Lead In/Out set ?

There is definitely something odd going on, either that I haven`t figured out yet just haow it all works, seem overly complicated to me 😞 😞

So I made a brand new design and model and created a "center compensation" path. I do see an "extra lead-in" added to the specified lead-in, on the same direction. Then I changed to the "regular" left compensation and that extra toolpath stays there. And yes, I have to manually "Generate" and select Yes to the dialog that tells me the toolpath is valid to see the change.

To me it's confusing and it shows a behavior that is somewhat hard to understand. Why is it necessary to have some extra lead-in added to the lead-in just specified above? It's a mistery

As I said, it does seem to be overly complicated, however it does appear to actually work 🙂 🙂
