Tool library consolidate tools

Not sure where to post ideas anymore, but a feature that would be greatly appreciated is being able to drag and drop operations into different tools. As seen below, I used some templates to make some operations, and this created redundant tools. I would LOVE it if we could drag and drop operations to use different tools.

There are also times when I am using a tool to do many operations, but then I realize midway down the line I have to use a different tool. This would be a huge time saver if I could drag all those operations to the new tool.

Maybe there is a way to do this already but I do not know it, in which case, let me know.

@Collin_Korver Thank you for your suggestion, it is something that has not been thought of in the New tool library to my knowledge. I have created a task for it called CAM-20821 and will discuss with the development team.

Thanks

This is really an annoying issue when using templates. Is there any way we can get this suggestion more publicity?

@Collin_Korver The issue is on the list for discussion with the Development team and I think its a great idea. I have tagged some users so we can hopefully get their thoughts and suggestions on the proposed and that may give me traction my end to prioritise it over work lined up.

Ways to easily change tools for one or more operations in various forms (drag and drop, multi-select and change tool from context click menu in browser) is important for usability. We should also consider that the underlying cause for needing to change tools, in this case, is that templates are creating new tool instances when that template’s tool may already exist in the document or an appropriate tool may already exist when the template is used.

FWIW, my thoughts on this align with @cj.abraham

I see this issue most often when tools utilize multiple speeds and/or feeds (such as roughing vs. finishing). Providing some mechanism to say to Fusion "hey, these are the same tool, stop duplicating them" would go a long way to improving the QoL.

However, I will admit that I've not done a lot of testing with the new library and multiple speed/feed settings in this context. Is it possible that this issue will go away a bit?

I just encountered another example in which consolidating/ mass switching tools would be very valuable. I made a program for a specific machine, but needed to remake the program for a different machine due to a crash. The one machine has slightly different tools/ the same tools but in different holders. (I "incorporate" the machine spindle into my 5 axis tool holders for simulation purposes and that wreaks havoc on automating tool probing). It wouldn't be such a big deal except the program had >100 operations in it. It turned into a time consuming and tedious job.

Is this going to go anywhere because it is terribly annoying and cluttered looking having 5 of the "same" but different tool in my active library.

We are in the process of looking at finalising expected behaviours of drag and drop and will be looking to implement.

Thanks

Is there any update on CAM-20821

@Collin_Korver The alignment of all the libraries regarding the drag and drop functionality is something that is still being finalised. However, the team are not currently focussed on this and CAM-20821 will likely not be worked on in the near future. I know this feature is important to you and the functionality, however implemented, will benefit users so I will ensure that I reach out to you when the team re-focus on additional tool library functionality.

King regards

Is tool consolidation within the tool library still a potential or current feature?

To make sure we're on the same page here, what exactly do you mean by "tool consolidation"? Are you carrying on the same conversation that was raised by the OP, or are you referring to something else?

The gist of the OP was to inquire about dragging/dropping of operations and tools in the Tool Library. This is not possible, and I'm not aware of any current plans to make that possible. However, you can drag and drop tools from one operation to another (provided that it is a supported tool type for that operation)

Hi Seth,

I was not aware of the drag and drop functionality from operation to operation. Good to know and I'll try it out.

My original inquiry was related to the tool library duplicating the same tool when viewing the part file tool list. I was wondering if there was a way to eliminate duplicate tool instances?

It shouldn't be doing that, I thought we addressed that sometime ago. Could you share a screenrecording showing your workflow so we can better understand what's triggering this behavior?
