Steep and Shallow Undercuts

Is there any way to create a steep and shallow under cut for the attached image the uses vertical passes in stead of horizontal?

I also tried to cheat and use a slot operation with tool orientation but could not get it to post with z axis cuts.  Was thinking maybe there would be a way to override the posted WCS.

Is it possible to machine the part normal to that groove? Having that long of a lollipop cutter won't give great results, they are fragile tools and expensive, so when you break one, time for tears. If you had to machine it in that position with that tool, you might play around with Trace and see if that will work.

Can it not just be laid flat and use a Ball End Mill ??? Would seem much easier to me 🙂

LOL yes it would be easier to lay the part down.   It is not possible because the feature in inside a small bore.  I only modeled it that way for clarity and because I can't post a picture of the actual part.

Some times we have tipped the part at an angle to allow of use of a shorter tool and still clear the bore but we always have to code it manually.

Yes, if you make a sketch path and use 2D Trace / 3D Project, include a lead in / lead out for FULL pathing but its easy to overengage a cutter in that scenario

(enhanced) Flow with Multiaxis is usually my go to for lollipop

We have used trace but have to draw every line to get what we need.  We take very shallow cuts in a ramp motion like a "2d Slot Operation"

There is an option under the Steep Passes section which allows the user to Machine Undercuts.

Why would you have to program it manually, Fusion should be able to program it if the part is kicked up at an angle. This sounds like an interesting application; can you please post back to the group with your solution to save us all a headache for similar problems?

I can't really put this one at an angle and I have never really gotten it to work at an angle either.   That was also before I had steep and shallow and just thought it may open up some other opportunities.

I would be happy to have some one show me a method to have fusion generate code from the model.

I currently draw the sketch lines and use trace.  it is a delicate cutter so multiple passes are needed so if produces a good finish.

It's not a huge deal was just looking for input to make things easier/faster.

I have no idea of the size of your part, but if I had to tilt it, this is the way that I would set it up. The circle represents the bore that you are working through to check for collision. I do not have any of the machining extensions so can't help with steep and shallow either. I am sure there are other ways to do this but without a solid model to work with, ideas will be limited, understand the need for confidentiality with customer parts.

Is the lollipop cutter the same radius as the groove you're cutting?

While it does involve creating sketches, I'd use Trace or Project, with Axial Offset Passes (Trace) or Multiple Depths (Project) turned on
