Setting up tools on Dual Spindle Router

Hi, I am currently running a trail of Fusion to see if it's better than my current method of CAD/CAM. I use a dual spindle CNC Router

 

Can someone please explain where on the tool library I can select what spindle the tool will be located into? I would like to setup some tools for Spindle 1 and others for Spindle 2. This machine does not have a tool changer so it's ideal to have my most common tools split across the 2 spindles.

 

I also noticed that the toolpath for the slot seems to go in a strangle loop. I was wondering if there is a way to follow the profile of the slot? This occurs on the 1st slot depth. The 2nd depth it follows the profile

Hi @jordan3PPHR – that's an interesting router setup! Or at least not one I've heard of before. Out of curiosity, what kind of router do you have / would you say you consider dual spindle routers to be common? 

 

There's not a way to define a spindle for a tool currently, at least not in the way I think you are looking for. What you can define is a turret, and I'm guessing you could do some post editing to have your milling post consume that parameter and get things to work the way you like. I am not a post expert so I'm not totally sure what is and isn't possible, but I know folks have been able to achieve some pretty creative stuff in the past. 

Another option, if you don't want to edit your posts, is to use Manual NC. There are many options, including "Pass Throughs" which can write code directly into your program. This way you can write whichever code or codes you need to call the specific spindle before the "tool change" in your program (or do whatever else needs to happen). Is this what you were looking for, or do you need to be able to do something else?

 

As for the toolpath screenshots, it looks like the top one is Adaptive Clearing, which uses a constant engagement angle as part of the algorithm. That's why you get those odd curves as the toolpath output. If you want a toolpath that will follow the edges like what's on the bottom, 2D Pocket or 2D Contour should both do the trick.

Hi @martha.deans, thanks for getting back to me.

 

I managed to fathom it out. Setting the tool number to 1 or 2 sets which spindle it will use.

 

The Router I use is an AXYZ 4010 Router. See image below. I am not sure how common they are but it would make sense to have 2 spindles or the very least a tool changer

With regards to the toolpaths I was having a play/test to compare to my current CAM Software. There are more features in F360 than my current Software although not having 'Dogbone' fillets will slow me down as I regularly use them. But then again I can do all my CAD/CAM in a single piece of software for a much lower cost.

 

My test piece came out good and am happy with the quality. I'll now look to write a little method/process to follow to ensure consistency with some little hints. Practice makes perfect!
