Problems with 2d pocket face selection

Take a look at the attached screen shot.  I'm trying to machine out the pocket.  I've selected the perimeter at the bottom of each of the pockets I want to mill.  Fusion recognizes it, but then will only draw a path to cut some weird pseudo triangular portion of it.

I really hate this **** machine

I wish that they would sell it.

It never does just what I want,

But only what I tell it.

Any idea what I told it to do?

And what does the completed toolpath look like when you click "OK"?

Can you attach the .f3d file? File > Export > Save to local folder. Return to thread and attach the .f3d file in your reply

As an aside, there is a handy "Photos" icon that allows you to insert pictures right into your post rather than having us download them to our computer. Saves time and less aggravation for those trying to help out others on the forums.

Sorry..thought I was uploading photos "the easy way".  See if these help.

This is one of quite a few components in an imaginary project.  Is there a way to export just this component?Selecting Bottom Perimeter of PocketSelecting Bottom Perimeter of PocketAlthough it shows the entire perimeter, it doesn't want to cut itAlthough it shows the entire perimeter, it doesn't want to cut itAgainAgainCreated ToolPathCreated ToolPath

Found how to export a single component.  Should be attached.

Well, there certainly appears to be a bug going on here.

As a workaround, I'd suggest using 3D Pocket Clearing to remove the material, as that is "Model Aware"

@cj.abraham could you send this up the chain of command and see if there are known bugs regarding 2D Pocket Selections?

I shall die in the attempt.  When I"m dealing with a gigantic learn curve like this (we didn't cover this sort of thing in Photography School), I can almost always be pretty sure it's something I did...

In this case it's not something you did. I selected the feature a couple different ways and received the same results.

3D Pocket is super easy. Select your boundary, set your top and bottom heights and your max/min stepdown. It will see EVERYTHING inside of that boundary:

That sounds MUCH easier than what I've been doing anyhow.  I'll give it a shot.  I'm testing in Acrylic and have succeeded in glomming up two end mills so far.  Sticky stuff.....

Hi @apostM2K9B,

The selection chain is not closed. Closing the contour will fix your pocket selection and the toolpath will be correct. My rough guess is that the model sketch has contour overlaps.

Never thought of that.  The original drawing has a section that passes through the outer wall and would intersect with the perimeter.  Would that be a problem?

Just some thoughts:  Make sure you've got sharp tools for your acrylic and blow lots of air on it.  Might want to make some shallower cuts as well so things aren't heating up on you.  Don't do any deep cuts with full diameter of the tool as they chips won't have anywhere to escape to which will lead to your melting and build-up problem.

Acrylic machines wonderfully if you can get your stuff dialed in.  Finish passes on the floor and walls will also help alleviate any chipping.

Good luck.

Great advice.  I started out at the same speed I was cutting phenolic.  So...Had two bits that I needed to soak in acetone to get all the plexiglass off of them.  I got my feed rate WAY up and my cut depth down and it cut pretty well.  I also used a very strong vacuum to keep the chips up up and away.

I have no idea what is going on now.  I basically started over as I could not solve the previous issue and assumed it was a faulty drawing with the open path somewhere.  Now I've got what I think is basically the same drawing having avoided the area that had been pointed out to me.

For the life of me I've found now mix of pockets or contours or anything that will generate a tool path to cut recess in the center piece.

I'm must keep looping back through the same failed methods but have been trying different 2d's and 3d's and tutorials and geometries for about 5 hours now.  There's a case of beer in it for anyone who can lead me out of this.
