Problems with 2d pocket face selection

Hello.

I'm new to Fusion 360 (just installed it yesterday) so please excuse me if I missed something. I'm trying to CAM my first part and run into a problem I don't understand and have no idea where to look. I have watched some (not all) of the CAM videos but I did not find a solution there.

I have attached a screenshot to better explain the problem. When I try to mill a 2d pocket for the outer ring of the part and select the face on the ring it the resulting image is what I get. When I try to generate the path I just get tho following warning:

Warnung: No passes to link.
Generierung mit 1 Warnung(en) in 3.6s abgeschlossen.
Warnung: Kein Werkzeugweg enthalten.

When I extrude the outer ring past the height of the middle part I can generate a path but the selection is still rather big and extends beyond the ring itself (and so does the generated path). I have attached another image to show this.

What am I doing wrong? How can I generate a path and select the face of the outer ring and only the face?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Lars

Hi @Anonymous,

I have attached a model with updated selections for you. Face selection wasn't working well on this part, but I was able to get the appropriate selections using the edges instead.

Here are a couple resources you can check out about how to select the chains for your part. (Screencast, Tutorial, Forum Post)

You will have to update any parameters you need, since I simply did the geometry selections.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Noah

Thank you @balsmen.

Unfortunately I still don't get how you could get the selection in the version you attached. I tried selecting the edges before. I did not try it with manually edited chain contours before but this does not seem to make a difference. Somehow Fusion 360 gets confused between the inside and the outside of the part.

What exactly did you do and in what order? When I select the outer edge the result is the first attached image. When I then add the inner edges as a single chain I get the result in the second picture. It's the reverse of what you got (and what I want). And if I select the inner edges first as a single chain I get the last attached image. If then select the outer edge I get the same result as in the second image.

It makes no difference if I select the outer edge, enter into the contour editor and then accept this selection of a single edge instead of just selecting the edge without the contour editor. I also cannot select the outer and inner edges in one single chain as I Fusion 360 won't let me select the outer edge and an inner edge at the same time in the contour editor. But you also had two chains in your selection, so I guess that's alright.

What else can I do differently?

Thanks,

Lars

I forgot to mention: I also got a working toolpath using 3d pocket. So this problem is not urgent. I just would like to understand how to deal with a situation like this so I know how to fix it in the future.

Hi @Anonymous,

Here is a screencast showing my steps on how to create that selection. Let me know if you have any questions about any of the steps I did.

Thanks,

Noah

Thanks a lot @balsmen.

Changing the direction of the arrow did the trick. I did not know changing the direction would change what Fusion 360 considers to be inside and what outside. I don't remember seeing this anywhere.

Thanks again for for quick and precise support,

Lars
