Pocket is greatly undersized when machined.

Hello,

I have a fixture plate I am trying to machine and am having trouble reaching the desired pocket dimension during the machining process.  I am .15 too small  in X and Y.  Or basically .075 on all 4 edges.   If I was off by .0015 on all 4 sides I would chalk it up as my lil POS mini mill but I"m way off here.   I tried a 5/8 end mill and was even proportionality further off.  It feels as if I have  something setup wrong?? in MACH 3 or in my CAM.

Some background info:

I have a mini mill running on Mach 3.

1/2 Lakeshore carbide 2 flute flat end mill in an R8 collet holder.

Running at 30in/min 2500rpm .025 depth of cut.  Runs smoothly without chatter and does not feel as if its laboring. Feels good.

Did you use the Mach3 post processor to generate the code? Could you attach the code in your next reply? Unfortunately, I don't find anything jumping out at me with the Fusion file. Also, could you please state the desired width and length of the pocket? I can get that data from the model, I just want to make sure both are "on the same page" so to speak

I used the fusion 360 post processor.  File attached.

 

The stock that wiil be placed in the fixture is 5.035" X and 4.035 Y and .25 Z.   I set up my model in fusion for that exact x and y dimension with a .15 deep pocket.   What I end up with is:

4.885 X and 3.884 in Y.   I stopped the program before it finished so I dont know the Z.

One side note; When sharing nc code, it's preferred to share it as an attachment, not as one veeeeerrrrryyyyyy long post 😉 Files must have a .nc or .txt extension (just rename it if needed)

 

Bad news (or good?) The backplotted code gives me numbers that are identical to your model (if you add in the .500" diameter of the cutter):

On a side note, the width of the pocket is drawn up as 5.0462", not the size you mentioned (5.035")

 

The problem exists somehow on the machine end. Does the tool actually measure .500"? Are there any cutter comp or tool settings overriding what you are doing?

Sorry about pasting in all the code..... it kept kicking it out because it didn't like .tap. I will practice another method.

You are correct on the model being set for 5.046. That's what it should be.

Tool is 4.9950 according to my mititoyo slide calipers.

I was thinking along those lines that I have something set wrong in Mach 3 but was not sure. I was wondering if someone may be able to point me in the direction I need to make the necessary adjustments in Mach 3. I see where I can set offsets in the tool tab and did set up a tool #2 with a .5 cutting diameter but that did not help. I am lacking experience with Mach3 so I'm not shure where else to adjust compensations.

have you done other ops without problems?

 

if this is the first time, have you setup/calibrated your machines actual travel?

To be completely honest with you I have been so consumed with learning fusion 360 CAD and CAM to actually make g code, that I fall down laughing in disbelief the I can actually get the machine to move and cut. Of course it usually ends up in a crash because my work envelope is so small on the machine or feeds rates are too fast and binds up the tool..... None the less I have made a few practice pieces that I did not pay attention to actual dimensions because the shape looked correct. So I thought I was good.

Last week I marked a part and ran it with 4 holes in a square pattern and they were all off as well. I bought the machine ready to go..... but it looks as if I have more to get ready before I go.

I will learn how to calibrate the machine tonight after work and report back to you guys. Anything else I may need to look for??

Hi, I too am using a diy X2 mini mill with Mach3.  The problem could be in the set up/ calibration of your ball screws.  Have you verified that you are getting the movement the the DROs indicate? The set up is a little tricky.  You should double check this.

@LibertyMachineand @bilingham , thank you for your advice.   You were both correct in that it was on the machine end... and more specifically the xyz movements were not calibrated correctly.   It was pretty simple to set the calibration and then I re-ran the program successfully.  I did not find any tool offsets or work offsets that were stored in MACH 3.  Again thank you very much and I will move forward from here.
