OD profile

Just getting started with lathe CAM.  I do not understand why, after a facing operation, the profile operation generates a tool path on the face of the part at the start of the profile run.  I would think that since the part is already faced there is no need to go to less than the OD of the first section of the profile.

I have tried to confine the tool path by selecting all the od features, but the tool path still does a movment on the face of the part.

I did look at the youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdgyMvhFvjQ and at 4:40 into video the path is similar to what I am getting.

Thanks,

Denis

Can you upload a file, it's easier to help if we have your file.

Thanks for the file. That's a good one, the reason it trying to face the front again is because it's see material there in the hole that hasn't been removed. Normally you could set an ID on the offsets tab but that doesn't work with the profile you have. If you're not going to bore the hole I think the only option is to draw without the hole.

I'll experiment a bit more drawing a component as stock and see if that might work.

Not really what your looking for but this is what I get if I bore the centre away and use rest machining in the profiling op. File attached.

Thanks for the help.  Being very unfamiliar with how typical lathe CAM software works lead me to ask the question.

Your pointers and observations are appreciated.  The real part has much thinner walls and presently, when the part is made, the ID and OD are worked down together in stages.

I can see, as you point out, that the software is trying to address the inner remaining material.

I will use your operations sequence as ordered in the sample part you provided and go from there.

Regards,

Denis.
