Negative stock to leave makes tool go into model + difficulty selecting pocket for 2d adaptive clearing

Hi all

I'm again having problems with oval shapes. This time two different problems on the same model:

1) To make my model fit with a counter-part, I'm adding -0,1 "stock to leave" in two places. Unfortunately when adding this, the tool decides to go into the model where it shouldn't go - but only on the right side. I've tried adding "stock contours" to limit the range of the tool, but the tools still goes into the model. Any ideas how to stop it from plunging right into the model on the right side? See added video.

2) Same model but on the opposite side. I simply cannot select the right pocket for 2d adaptive clearing. No matter what I do. Is it a oval bug again? See added video (it's kind of a mess to watch me trying to select the right pocket, but you get the point).

Thanks in advance.

Erik

Can you upload your Fusion f3d file, go to :-

File > Export > Select f3d format > Save to a location on your computer > Then attach it to your reply using the "Attachments" facility below your reply box.

It is hard to tell from your videos exactly what is happening, it looks like the part is not one solid model ??

For your information, you may get better results using the 3D Adaptive as it is what is known as "Model Aware" whereas the 2D Adaptive is not.

Thanks for your quick reply. I've attached the f3d file below. It does seem to be one solid model.

Will try the 3d adaptive!

That file you supplied doesn't have any toolpaths or Setup applied to it. Could you save out a file that does?

Of course, here you go.

Positive stock to leave (0,1) works OK, but you will se that when setting negative stock to leave (-0,1), it will go into the model that isnt part of the selection.

On the back it isn't possible to select the correct pocket.

Apologies for the delay getting back, definitely a weird one this 🙂 🙂

OK, seems to be a lot going on with your Model, the Top Left and Right Toolpaths were easy to fix, just a matter of changing some settings.

The shape on the bottom looks like it is an issue with your Model, most likely the method used to create it, I assume that you imported it from an external source as there is no Timeline/History.

I was able to get it to work correctly by slightly changing the shape by creating a Sketch and then Extruding it to change the shape, then it worked OK, so maybe for the Bottom shape you need to go back to the beginning with the Model.

Modified file attached, too many things to type out so go carefully through the settings for the Top Left and Right.

A couple of things to look at are the Extension Method, change to "Closest Boundary" and the "Stock Contour".

Both work fine with the Minus Stock to leave after my Modifications. As you can see in the images below the toolpath has taken off the Minus Stock to Leave amount that I set of -0.1mm.

It does work OK on the Top with the 3D Adaptive but not on the Bottom 😞 😞

Apologies for late reply and  thank you so much for your help!!

I disabled timeline/history because it gave me so many problems with manufacturing ovals (I made a post here about it a month ago and found another thread mentioning this as a solution).

A pity with that bottom part doesn't work, but thanks for letting me know - then I don't have to waste too many hours trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. It is indeed made from two separate drawings put together, so I will try and draw it all from scratch and see if this changes anything.

Thank you so much for your kind help 🙏

It was puzzling me so I had another go at your file, I made an extruded block of the bottom shape as a new Body, then cut out the middle of the part and created a new block and combined the two end pieces with the new middle piece, then I moved the shaped block to position and cut the new block with it and it now works 🙂

For what it`s worth if I was doing the job I would do the Adaptive toolpaths to Rough all the areas out and cut say -0.05mm for the Minus Stock to leave then and use a 2D Contour to run a Finish cut with say a -0.1mm Minus Stock to leaveto to get a better/smoother finish, anyway, in the attached file I left them both to a -0.1mm value, I`ll leave you to play with that setting along with all your feeds/speeds/depths etc, etc.

At least it all seems to work as expected now, the selection of the Bottom shape is correct now 🙂 🙂 🙂

Hopefully this will help you a little more with a way of sorting out your Model 🙂 🙂 🙂

Amazing, thank you so much!

I will take a deeper look in one or two days when I have more time, and get back to you if I have any more difficulties or questions! 🙏 Much appreciated!
