Hi, Looking for help creating a toolpath that works for this type of "ramp in" feature.  We make lots of different parts that have this type of feature, and I always end up using a sketch and the Trace tool path to get the feature machined.  I generally have to make a few tries to get the placement correct, and obviously if there is a way to machine this feature using a method that doesn't require a new sketch, that would be ideal.

To do something that is close to the way you are currently doing the job without the need for a sketch then probably the 3D Parallel will be closest.

I notice that the 0.25 tool doesn`t clear the shape out as it is 0.255 at its widest point, is this intended by you ? If so then the 3D Parallel will do a straight line with stepdown, see image below and example file attached. If you want to clear it out then try a 3D finishing toolpath like the Scallop but you will need to run very small stepovers to get anything like a good finish 😞

If that`s what you are looking for then play around with the settings, if you want it to start at the opposite end the just change the direction under the Passes tab from 0 deg to 180 deg and it will cut in the opposite direction, anyway, have a look and evaluate 🙂 🙂 🙂

@engineguy Thanks for the reply!  I did intend the 0.005" oversize to allow the ball mill to "step over" and maintain climb cutting on the return path out of the stock.  The path I usually draw for using the Trace path steps over 0.003" to maintain climb cutting.    I tried the parallel tool path but it fails to produce an acceptable tool path on longer versions of the feature, machining only part of the feature or retracting and plunging creating a terrible surface finish.   It seems as though this is just going to be the only way to accomplish a smooth and efficient ramp in, unless I am just missing something in the settings.
