Inaccurate Form Tool

Hello,

I am trying to create a form tool and see an accurate tool path as well as the form tool geometry represented. What is happening is that after I create the form tool and it is in my tool library, I assign speeds and feeds to it (default is "0" in every box) and then Fusion represents it as a cylinder and I can no longer see the form of the tool.

I am hopeful that someone has some insight as to what I can do to fix this. I've tried creating the tool in the native file as well as drawing the tool separately and adding it to my library but as soon as I do anything to alter the tools' cutting parameters to be something other than "0", it no longer shows up as a form tool but as a cylinder.

I've attached examples of what is happening. The screenshot of the cylinder is only after putting in a number for my SFM and FPT.

Hi Thuren,

I had some issues with a form mill shape changing, it was driving me nuts. What i found was that even as it looked like the correct form the outside profile was mad up from two connected lines rather than one straight line (two lines attached together) whilst this looked liked the exact form everytime i went to save it it saved incorrectly. it seems that every line of the form has to be one continuous line not broken or a couple of lines. Dont know if this will help

All of the tool geometry is in the same sketch and drawn as simply as possible. Granted, my tool has some chamfers and fillets so in at least one case, there is a line connecting to a fillet which connects to another line. There is really no other way to make it simpler unless it was drawn as a spline which sounds almost impossible.

Out of curiosity,  what happens when you swap to the old Tool Library? I'm vaguely aware of a few problems impacting Form Tools in regards to the new Library.

Are you by any chance trying to do this in the New Tool Library ?

If so then are known issues with it, try reverting back to the Old Tool Library and creating the tool there, once done you can then switch back to the New one if you prefer.

There is an update on the Form tools issue due I believe in the next update, just have to wait and see what the DEvelopers have come up with 🙂 🙂

Autodesk Employee did come back to us in another thread to say it was being looked at and would be done in the next update heres hoping 🙂 🙂 🙂

Go to the top right of your screen and click on your name, from the list click on "Preferences" and when the dialog opens go to "Preview" tab and then scroll down till you see "Tool Library" which should have a "check" mark in the box next to it, uncheck it and then click "Apply" and you will be back to the old Tool Library" 🙂 🙂

I managed to get the form tool to work in the old library but the functionality of the form tool designer needs some serious work. I hope someone from Autodesk can chime in on this.

For example:

When creating the tool, you must select the tool profile, axis and compensation point. The way this functions for an accurate simulation is that the compensation point I must select is actually the top of the tool shank and the axis is flipped in regards to how Fusion's little prompt explains to do it. So basically it's backwards from the instructions. My tools were drawn on the front plane, if that makes any difference.

@thuren.machine  With the Form tools this is a known issue in the old and new tool library. I believe the experience is inconsistent due to the plane the sketch is created in.

We have already completed some work in the new library for form tools that should be available in the June update so the tool images do not revert to endmills as mentioned above and we have lined up the task ref CAM-21073 to be completed in the near future which will clear the problem with the direction you have outlined.
