How to choose between 2D adaptive and pocket and contour for use with X-Carve

I mention the machine just for context. The machine should not affect my choice. But as I look at the simulation of the three holes at the top of the model, I do not understand why the machine jumps back and forth between the three holes after each level. Am I missing some parameter in the setup that I should choose differently?

For Adaptive, "Order by Area" is off by default. For Pocket, "Order by Depth" is also off as default. So, with default settings, Pocket will do each pocket before moving on to the next. For adaptive, it's the reverse, with it running each depth on all pockets before moving to the next one. 

However, you can change Adaptive behavior with this little switch:
