Finish pass does not obey confinement

Is there a reason that the finish passes do not obey the confinement settings?  I have seen this for a while and don't understand the logic or it is a bug.  Why do only the roughing passes follow the confinement?

I think the idea is that finishing passes only finish something when they are touching the model so to speak.

So as long as the confinement is within the model rough and finish are the same. If they go beyond the model finish passes say there is nothing to finish and they stop.

I kind of understand that, not saying I wouldn't agree with anther solution but I get the point.

@Laurens-3DTechDraw you are probably correct but it does not seem like a very good solution to me.  I would assume if I want to extend a machining region I want it to be like that for all passes.

 

In the case of the above it is not really a big deal as it just a part off extension.  However on the front side I have a very short fit that I want to machine long so I can get a micrometer on it.  After I have it established I will machine off the excess stock.  The only solution is to use a sketch and override the model in the operation.  However it is a little clunky in Fusion, compared to HSMWorks IMO.  You can't just use sketch segments you have to create a full closed sketch.  You also can just select the segments of the sketch you want to use.

Personally, I would love an serious improvement to making machining from a sketch possible.

It's one of my go to turning problem workarounds in HSMWorks.

Tool nose radius is why it goes sharp in the path. It's not violating your model even though the theoretical sharp corner of the tool looks like it does.

@zodiaceng I know that, however I can't measure that diameter any longer. because it does plunge into the stock and I am at times I would need to measure partly on the the stock if the fit is very narrow.  So I would want it turned the full way across the confinement.  I guess I just need to change how I view confinement, because it only applies to roughing.   I was just thinking that if someone wanted to extend the area they roughed they would want to extend all cuts.   It seems as though confinement is more designed to confine inside the model vs outside the model.

 

Also not so sure how rolling the finish tool around the edge of HTA materials would hold up.

 

 

so how to do you handle the issues described in the above post, start creating sketches???

@zodiaceng If you actually look at the first image closely you will see that it is not the finish cut that is cutting around the corner but he rough since I have allowed grooving on due to geometry that is not in the image.  So the finish tool does not go around the corner it just does not turn across the diameter all the way down the confinement.

Thanks for posting! The issue in which finish passes do not obey confinement settings is a known issue, logged as CAM-2367. While I am unsure of the original thinking behind this, I agree that the finishing passes should obey the same model confinement definitions as the roughing passes. 

 

I will keep you updated on CAM-2367 as I have more information from our development team to share.

@paul.clauss there appears as though there is also an issue with the rough pass. If you look closely at the image in the original post you will see the final rough pass does not ever machine to the confinement like the other passes.

Not sure if it is a separate issue or not.
