Engraving on 3D Body?

Hi

For a custom gun-stock butt that should get an engraving of a family crest in the centre of it...

the "engraving" came off a SVG File....  so I've got the outlines, unfortunately half a million tiny curves,,... and I've 3D projected it onto the actual body that will be machined:

The Problem is I can't seem to find a working strategy to do a V-Carving off the crest....

what would be a good approach here?

You don't need to project the sketch, just use the Project toolpath! The Engrave toolpath tends to mislead new users and should probably be renamed V-Carve.

Just to clarify, it looks like you just need to trace a single line for your engraving. V-Carving machines between 2 sets of curves and varies the depth to maintain 2 points of contact. Here's a link to the Engrave toolpath help.

I've managed to get something in the mean time using the trace command...

the problem is the project command does not seem to work at all...

gives me an error about the wrong tool... (it's a 60° Engraver...)

The tool needs to have a non-zero tip. In your tool library, edit the tool so it has some small value in the "tip diameter"

Just to follow up on this: the tip diameter needs not only to be nonzero...it needs to be nonzero enough. In attempting to follow the advice here, I made a simple model and curve-to-trace, and then edited a 45-degree chamfer tool to give it a nonzero tip. I typed .0005in, and it stalled out with no explanation. A shift to .005in was enough to make it work (at least on my test case).
