This post if FYI, maybe a tutorial for to CNC engrave a photograph:

Up to a few minutes ago I was unable to figure out how to even get started using Fusion to 3D mill a photograph. This is something that was relatively straight forward in another CAM software years ago. I really didn't find much on the subject here on the Forums or elsewhere though there are a few things in the Design forum. Regardless, here are my notes:

 

To start off the Image2Surface Add-In was created for Fusion (NOT a script, pay attention here) many years ago which appears to do what I need it to do.

Once the "ADD-IN" has been included in Fusion and started I had a new "Show image 2 surface" tool to use under the "ADD-INS" drop down under the Design window - Utilities tab.

 

Running "Show image 2 surface" tool opens a new window. Select your image somewhere on your computer, adjust the controls for pixel skip, depth etc to update the 3D preview on the screen. You can zoom in, orbit, pan to verify your results. Once you're happy with what you see click "Generate surface". After a few seconds, a minute you'll be rewarded with a surface dropped into Fusion.

 

This is where I'm at. I used the move tool to locate the 3D surface to it's appropriate place. Maybe there's a way to place it exactly, or better define where to create the plane in the first place..... I'm not sure yet.

Well, from the above, writing a mill program from the surface was pretty boring. 3D Parallel, 1/8" ball with 0.01" step over looks ok. I did have to scale the surface non-uniform X, Y to fit my area and Z to tweak the depth. I can't show you the finished product due to an NDA.

 

Overall I'm a little embarrassed how long this took me start to finish but now it's setup for next time and maybe it'll help someone else. Be neat to mill a picture of my family in brass I think.
