Deep Drill Z Problem

So I been haveing problems with drills....

So i went to a deep drill full retract....specified pecking depth of .1mm

I expected the first peck to be .1mm deep.  but it was not it was .5mm deep which is the maximum stepdown in the following contour cut.

This allowed my to estimate the depth of the first peck.

The default height setting is hole top which should be the top of the hole...

But apparently this is should be the top of the model because the hole is selected from a point on The bottom of the model because i extruded the part up from the origin....

Have I got this correct?????  This is confusing to say the least and has cost me more than a few bits.

Why is stock top not the default  (it is impossible to drill a hole that does not start at the top (orientation as defined in  stepup)

Geez sorry buyt that earns a wtf

I would expect you to get a crash in simulation as well when it goes into the part in rapid?

Selecting holes is preferred over points. Because then the top of the hole can be determined from the geometry you have selected. That's why it's so nice it's a CAD & CAM package in one. Can always adjust the 3D model to actually look like what you need to machine.

Often setting the top of the drilling operation to the stock top will cause unwanted cutting time as many times a part has been pre-machined before you start drilling.

You can change the defaults for yourself so you don't run into this all the time.
