Creating a toolpath for a face-cam profile using a 4th axis

New user here~

 

I'm struggling to create a toolpath to machine the cam-lobe shape on the face of this part.

 

I have modeled the profile carefully as such the CNC would only need to move in the X (left to right) table direction and turn the rotary table at the same time.

I can't seem to get the wrap toolpath to accept the shape.

 

Any ideas?

If you have the "Machining Extension"  then you could possibly use the Rotary toolpath, that would just rotate the part and the Machine would move in both the Z and the X axis.

 

If not (Like me) then it could be done using just three axis using something like a "Roughing Passes" Contour to remove most of the material and a 3D finishing toolpath to finish the shape on one side and then a 180 degree index to do the other side, see image below for how it might look in the Simulation.

Example file attached for ideas of how it might be done with a couple of different 3D Toolpaths, might point you towards a different way to do the job.

 

The "Wrap" function does not do a full 360 degrees so likely you would need to do two toolpaths anyway 😞

Hi! Thanks for you interest in this. It was challenging but over the last several days I've been getting more proficient in the software and (thanks to the community) I have since realised there are a bunch of different ways to do it. This is the best one I've figured out yet - Using the machining extension like you suggested and "Rotary Pocket" so it can be side milled with a flat end mill.
