CAM Setup, which to pick any why: manufacturing model, a component, a body?

Hi,

Last time I used F360 CAM was prior to the intro of manufacturing models. I am coming up to speed with the changes, but still experience some strange behaviors related to stock boundaries being respected during toolpath generation. Reading through the forum I found a few posts wherein issues were traced back to the setup model definition, picking bodies vs components vs models. So what is the ramifications and/or best practice for picking either the model ("testv1:1"), body under the model ("body1 under model"), component ("component under model"), and body under component ("body under component"). Quoted text refers to screenshot below.

Hi

 

Don't use Manufacturing Models if at all possible(they are really designed for nesting/arrange type work), they end up causing problems for normal workflows, I don't use them AT ALL(If you are worried about Fixtures or other manufacturing related stuff Cluttering up your design space, you can derive your part out to another file to do the manufacturing work, and keep the design file "Clean")

 

In terms of Picking Bodies or Components, It depends on what exactly you are doing.

Picking a Component will select all bodies/surface bodies inside that component which is great if that indeed is what you want to select but often you end up selecting stuff you didn't want to like Maybe You have a Stock Body(For Stock From Solid) inside that component or patch surfaces etc.

 

To avoid that Make sure the component only contains a Body or bodies for the Finished part, other Surfaces or bodies can be in the Root component or another component.

 

 

I machine a lot of imported(From Solidworks) Fabrications that are Multi body, The First thing I do is put all the bodies into a component as If you select just the bodies, when you create a subsequent setup rest machining will give you a warning.

The rest machining from Preceding setup only works properly with Components.

 

 

If the component just contains one Body, selecting the body normally doesn't hurt anything.

 

The other thing that messes up stuff often is you create a setup with nothing selected under model and click OK

Fusion gives you a warning:

But even when you click no, and select the body it also selects the root component:

Which I think is a bug but it doesn't seem to get any attention, it should only select the root component if you click yes
