Ball end mill - effective cutting diameter

Hello everyone,

I was trying to find a way how to calculate effective cutting diameter while using a ball end mill on complex surfaces either with 3ax or 5ax machining directly from data that CAM sends to postprocessor (sometimes referred as Cutter Location Data or CL data).

I was able to find the 'Dumper / dump' postprocessor which should post out all the data that the CAM software passes onto postprocessor, however I could not find the information I was looking for in the .dmp file. The only thing that is shown in the .dmp file is the programmed tool tip point and current feedrate for linear movement.

The information I need to be able to compute the effective cutting diameter are shown on the picture below. Concretely I need to know the vector ne and CP (contact point between the tool and machined surface). Is there any way how to get this information out of Fusion as it has to be there because the CAM computes the tool path based on this information as well?Effective diameter.PNG
Attached please find as well the.f3d testing part and .dmp file screenshot of linear move.image.pngThank you for any info!

Hello @fidaba

At the time Fusion doesn't support 3D cutter compensation, weither on 3axis, or 5axis toolpath.

So the information is not available.

On a 5axis toolpath we will get the tool axis vector, but not the contact vector.

This information is available on others Autodesk products, but not with Fusion.

PS : PowerMill and FeatureCAM can output the contact normal.
