2D contour geometry

This has me stuck!  trying to do a simple 2d contour on an open external path.

I can get either a path that is basically all over the place or only on one corner.

Where am i going wrong?

Looks like it is just your selection, you have all the edges selected for the contour, try holding down the "Alt" key on your keyboard and just selecting the top straight edge and the two top arcs, see images below and modified file attached.

The Lead/in collision warning is because you don`t have the stock on that side removed, so do an operation for that and you will get rid of the warning.
