Units of Measure Confusion

I just got off a call with Support and I realized there are 2 different units of measure in the BOM layout. I am wondering what the need is.

When creating a part my engineers pick from the Units of Measure for Bills of Materials. This is the one that comes prepopulated with 16 standard ones.

When I go into the BOM layout though I can pick to display that one from the items details page or I can pick this one.

Which doesn't always display the UoM. What is the thinking behind this?

The Units field in your BOM is not provided in the standard solution. In a standard environment, you can only select the Units of Measure in the item details to ensure that the UOM is always the same for all usages of the component.

With the Units field in the BOM, you could set individual UOMs for each usage of a component - not sure why that is needed. This must have been added as part of the implementation.
